Determine the business value of a Web sub-site. Consider the following:
  • What information do you want to put on the intranet? What information do you need to obtain, create or exchange every day to do your job? How effectively and efficiently are you currently able to obtain, create or exchange this information? Would having it on the intranet help you or others work faster, better, smarter?
  • Who is your audience? Focus on your end users' needs.
  • Is the information available elsewhere on the intranet? Do you need to coordinate with other departments?
  • Do you have the resources/staff to keep the contents up-to-date. A useful Web sub-site has to be maintained.
If these and other questions indicate that an intranet would be a smart business decision for your group, get additional information by reading Intranet Policies.

Get some ballpark figures on cost. Check with other groups who already have a presence on the intranet.

Get buy-in from management by presenting the business case and cost figures.
