Please make sure you have read and understand the Company's Intranet Policies before you begin. Only employees designated by their manager are allowed to publish on the intranet. The standard tools to be used for web publishing is Adobe Contribute and Microsoft Photo Editor. Call the Help Desk (4636) and ask that you get access to these applications. If your needs go beyond basic publishing of departmental information to the intranet, you may need to purchase tools for publishing and graphics.
  • Select Software:
  • While people often design web pages using a text editor, several software programs currently available allow you to use WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editors to place HTML instructions into files for you. Such editors provide a graphical user interface (GUI) that enables you to create HTML pages without touching actual code. Popular HTML editors include Macromedia Homesite, Dreamweaver and Microsoft FrontPage. The IS group recommends Homesite but also supports Dreamweaver. Create a Heat ticket for your software purchase. For graphics we recommend Adobe Photoshop or Macromedia Fireworks.
  • Obtain training on how to use the appropriate design and content tools. You can register for Contribute training online.
  • The Intranet Council can be a resource. Contact Gaye Badgwell at 214.456.1061 for information.
  • If you are publishing any content that will require security (in the form of passwords), please contact IS's Support Desk (214.456.4357) and ask for Data Security to contact you.
  • People you may need help from during the build phase: Information Services - Intranet Operations - Greg Guth, 214.456.3886 Connection and server issues - Contact the Support Desk at X-HELP(4636), explain that you are working on an intranet sub-site and need help from the network server group. They will initiate a job order and you will be contacted.
  • Design your site so it is easy to maintain.
  • Don't assume that all visitors to your site will use the same browser features and defaults as you do. Construct your site to accommodate them. Survey your target audience.
